Walking Wounded At Woomera
The Markers’ Ode
There was movement on the rifle range
For the word had passed around
That a mob of rifle shooters were in town.
With Stan and Jim in charge and hooligans as markers
Everything was set to go
So we got on with the show.
The first shot was good but the rest were scattered ’round.
There were Aussies and the Poms, who shot their different way,
But all them took their pasting, most, every day.
The wind blew from the north, the strength of a rocket blast
As one of our English visitors was heard to remark
The point was proved at last
There were magpies and outers and misses not a few
And not many ranges could match the way Woomera blew.
Reputations didn’t count for much that week
As the wind swung round and round and up and down.
Some of the country’s best, Robinson, Martin, Freebairn & Ailing
To name a few, were all put to the test.
Volunteers were called to shoot the dreaded twelve,
A few brave souls answered the call.
Some were using big bullets and some where using small
But the end result was really bugger all.
Except our fearless chairman who was different from the rest,
For he was shooting east while the others were shooting west.
The great gun was the highlight of the week.
While Kaye and her helpers were feeding the inner man
Kevin was outside putting powder in a can.
And the further the week went the hotter the loads became.
When the crowd was gathered round
And the cigar was running hot
The crowd call out “Lets see you take a shot”
Smoke and flame bellowed forth
And a voice was heard to say
“Perhaps I should have used that at twelve today”.
When at last the week was ended, Robbo emerged victorious
It came as no surprise even though the day started shortly after sunrise
And on a final note
We the markers would like to wish one and all a safe trip home
